A hippo’s lower canine teeth (tusks) can grow to over 50cm (20 inches). The front teeth and tusks never stop growing, but are worn down and kept sharp by the constant grinding together with opposing teeth. Male hippos tend to have larger teeth than females and they show them in aggressive displays of dominance. The canine teeth are also used as weapons for defense and attack, when competing for territory, food, or  mates.
