Although the secretions are often known as “blood sweat” it’s neither blood nor sweat.
Hippos can stand in the hot sun all day without getting a sunburn due to this red-colored “hippo sweat” as it contains microscopic structures that scatter light, protecting the hefty mammals from burns.
Hippo sweat isn’t identical to the human kind, which is watery and seeps out of glands near the surface of our skin. Like magma, hippo perspiration erupts from deep within those two-inch-thick hides, and it’s more viscous than ours.
